LANVAL COLLECTION

The Arthurian legend of Lanval translated into textile form. Victorian wallpaper patterns are silkscreened and embroidered, creating layered surfaces where narrative emerges through texture.

Marie de France depicted writing her Breton lais, a collection of poems composed in the late 12th century. The story of Lanval is one of these lais.
Lanval, a beloved knight in King Arthur’s court, falls out of favor with the king.
Lanval meets a Maiden in the woods, and they fall in love.
She tells him the more he gives the richer he will become, but he must tell no one about her identity.
Lanval, joyed by love, gives gifts.
Lanval rejects the advances of Queen Guinevere, who exacts her revenge by accusing him first of homosexuality and then of attempting to seduce her.
Lanval is put on trial, and calls out to the Maiden to save him.
At long last, the Maiden appears and proves Lanval’s innocence. They run away together, away from Arthur, Guinevere, and the corrupt court.
